Why Rewarding Yourself Is Good for You

How often do you celebrate your own accomplishments? When was the last time you treated yourself when you achieved something?

Many people don't take the time to reward themselves because they're so busy trying to achieve multiple things at the same time. However, if you make the effort to integrate this mindset that rewarding yourself is important, it'll benefit you in multiple ways. Let's take a look at how it helps you:

Increases dopamine levels

When we reward ourselves, our brain's dopamine level increases. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that makes us feel joyful, improves memory retention, promotes sleep, and regulates our mood and appetite. And when we feel good about ourselves, our mental health improves as well.

Positive reinforcement pushes us through hard times

Checking things off your to-do list is addictive, and it's a terrific way to get through the workweek. Hopefully, finishing your work will be as fulfilling as whatever you're aiming for right now. By rewarding yourself, you'll get that little push that helps you over the finish line.

You'll be able to reduce distractions more effectively

Focusing on a reward helps you to stay on track with the task at hand. Instead of wasting time doomscrolling on social media, use that time to finish your task quickly and treat yourself with a reward at the end — like a facial mask, a glass of wine, or a dip in the pool.

Boosts self-esteem

Every day, there'll be something or someone that'll try to pull you down and remind you of your shortcomings. While failure can be used as a lesson to improve yourself, dwelling on it constantly doesn't help you in any way at all. Instead, recognise your own self-worth and reward yourself each time you complete a task. The world might not reward you but you can always reward yourself.

Helps to build good habits

Habits form a huge portion of our daily activities and one way to instill good habits is to reward ourselves after we've completed a yet-to-be-a-habit activity. For example, if you're not a regular at the gym but you'd like to go more often, reward yourself each time you complete a workout at the gym! It could be winding down with an episode of a TV show, reading a book, or taking a nap — anything that suits your fancy!
