The Benefits of Fasting

By Presto

The holy month of Ramadan is upon us soon and it's time for Muslims all around the world to fast from sunrise to sunset as an act of worship to God. 🌙

Did you know that fasting has some beneficial effects on you? Let's take a look at the wonderful perks of fasting together:

Fasting cleanses the gut

According to nutritionist Claire Mahy, fasting allows the gut to cleanse and strengthens its lining. This enables the body to concentrate on removing toxins as well as giving the digestive system a breather.

Your brain gets a boost

Scientists in the USA carried out a study that revealed the mental focus required during Ramadan increases the level of brain-derived neurotrophic factor. This causes the body to produce more brain cells which leads to improved brain functions. Stress levels are also greatly reduced due to a reduction of the cortisol hormone, also known as the "stress hormone".

It helps you to get rid of bad habits

During Ramadan, Muslims abstain from food, drink, smoking, and sexual activity during their fasting period. This is a great opportunity for individuals to ditch their vices for good as their bodies will acclimatise to the absence of these bad habits until their addiction is gone for good. Besides that, it is much easier to quit a bad habit when you're in a group, and Ramadan is the perfect time for you to find like-minded people to ditch a vice together.

Acts as an appetite suppressant

When you structure your day around activities that do not involve eating, your body eventually gets accustomed to not feeling hungry frequently. The less food you put in your stomach over a length of time, the more your stomach shrinks. As your body gets accustomed to how you eat, your usual appetite will decrease slowly. This is useful for those who are looking to lose some weight.

Fasting leads to lower cholesterol levels

A group of cardiologists in the United Arab Emirates discovered that people observing Ramadan display a positive effect on their lipid profile, signifying a reduction of cholesterol in their blood. Low cholesterol levels reduce the risk of getting a heart attack or stroke and increase one's cardiovascular health.
